Snow continues to delay pothole repair in Moncton

MONCTON- Moncton’s Public Works Department said snow and melting snow is delaying their pothole repair efforts.

Mayhew Lloy is a works supervisor. He said the snow runoff makes it difficult to do their work.

“Some of the edges of the road still have snow on them so the edges of the road covers the drain and that prevents the water from running into the drains,” he said. “The water stays on the road weakening the road and making it more difficult to fill the holes.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Lloy says potholes filled with water can’t be filled and repaired.

“Nothing will stick and if you have water in a hole it’s like trying to glue something at your house,’ he said. “If you’ve got water on it you’ve got to dry it first.”

People getting around Moncton have noticed the damage left behind by a hard winter. Mitch Peters says the roads are in rough shape.

“We’re congested with snow and with all the new potholes coming up it’s a lot harder travelling around,” he said.”I’ve got another thing to watch out for other than pedestrians and traffic.”

Even garages have noticed a spike in repairs.  Jean Paul Belliveau runs J.P.’s Garage in Dieppe. He says suspension and tires are getting the brunt of the damage.

“Right now what i’m seeing is a little more damage to basic struts and shocks and broken belts through the tires,” he said, noting drivers should slow down to avoid damages.

Lloy says snow and water on the roads should delay work by about a week. In the meantime, he’s hoping for more warm and dry weather.
