Honouring Cst. Neil Bruce killed 50 years ago in the line of duty

KELOWNA — He was a young Constable, killed in the line of duty. Constable Neil Bruce, just 26-years-old, was shot on April 10, 1965, while attempting to negotiate the release of a 16-year-old rape victim, being held against her will inside a Westbank cabin.

Four days later, Cst. Bruce succumbed to his injuries. He left behind a wife and a 2-year-old child.

It’s been 50 years since the tragic incident and today Mounties are publicly honouring their fallen comrade.

“The ceremony will be to honour him for making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” says Cpl. Joe Duncan.

The ceremony took place this morning to pay homage to the fallen officer, and later this afternoon there will be a reception at Cst. Neil Bruce School, at 1:05 p.m.
