WATCH: Horse-drawn library brings books to Argentinian village without internet

For many youngsters around the world access to the internet is taken for granted.

But in the small Argentine village of Condor Huasi, where there is no connection to the world wide web, schoolchildren have come up with an alternative way to entertain both themselves and the locals using no modern technology whatsoever.

Instead of spending their time glued to computer monitors, the children load up a horse cart with books from the school’s library and go around the village on the cart – or walking behind it – visiting local residents.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Riding a cart pulled by ‘Pepe’ the pony, the students take books out into the local community up to three times a week, to practice reading and bring cultural activities to neighbours and neighbourhoods who, just like themselves, are off the grid.

The students came up with the idea for the mobile library project due to the lack of extra-curricular activities at the school and in the community.

Local resident Julia Lazarte said she wished the children had access to the internet to be able to obtain information in a faster and easier way, but for now studying in an old-fashioned way remains their only option.

Condor Huasi sits just 60 kilometres away from the provincial capital of San Miguel de Tucuman, a city of half a million people.
