Regina – There are all types of accommodations available to suit different budgets and lifestyles.

Hostels, dorm style sleeping with shared common areas, are a time-tested option for budget conscious travelers looking for companionship and freedom.

“I really like the fact that I can prepare my own meal, especially because I often use them for running races,” said Joanne Schmidt, a traveler from Calgary. “Then I can make my own oatmeal in the morning, and I don’t have to worry about anything.”

Another similar option for travelers is Airbnb.

It’s a website that connects travelers with people willing to rent out their rooms, similar to a bed and breakfast.

However Airbnb is raising questions of legality here in Regina.

Dane Waldal has a listing on Airbnb. He said the City of Regina has reached out to him, saying he needs to get a commercial license.

“When we first started [renting out rooms] we had a bunch of hassle from the City. They signed up with a fake account through Airbnb and started messaging us every couple of days saying we were in violations of some random bylaw.”

City officials said all listings through Airbnb are technically commercial listings and must have a permit in order to operate.

Commercial bed and breakfasts have to follow very specific regulations.

Such regulations include where you operate a bed and breakfast, how many guest rooms are available and how the building looks.

However, given the fluidity of the listings, simply identifying renters, let alone enforcing the regulations is problematic.
