Winnipeggers rally for transit improvement

WINNIPEG – Taking the bus is something many Winnipeggers dread.

And that’s why a group of university students are speaking up about the current state of Winnipeg Transit, asking for more buses.

“We need more people getting rides to where they want to go, so that they’re not just stuck out there in limbo without any protection form the cold,” said University of Winnipeg student Nicolas Cyrenne.

Instead of pushing ahead with a $600 million leg of the southwest rapid transit corridor, some bus riders want to see mayor Brian Bowman spread the money out and improve transit service for everyone.

“We think that if you’re going to spend that amount of money, you’re much better off investing it in more frequent bus service,” said Joseph Kornelsen of Functional Transit Winnipeg.

Something many people would like to see happen across Winnipeg, especially in the areas with limited transit service.

“We have huge transit challenges in this new development called Waverly West, in Bridgewater Lakes… Sage Creek wants more transit, I know the north east part of the city wants more transit,” said St. Norbert councillor Janice Lukes.

The city budget will be addressed Monday.

“The top priority that we as a council need to focus on is finding other sources of revenue,” said Lukes.
