WINNIPEG – Emergency crews rescued a semi-trailer truck driver from the icy waters of the Assiniboine River just after midnight Friday morning after he went off a Trans-Canada Highway bridge.

It appeared the driver was trying to pass another vehicle when it went through the guard rail and into the river on the Grand Valley Bridge in the rural municipality of Whitehead, RCMP said.

The cab landed upright but the trailer tipped and spilled its load of bread into the river.
