VANCOUVER – The BC SPCA is hoping the public can help them find out what happened to a puppy who was found wandering near Providence Farm, on the outskirts of Duncan, last week.

He was bleeding and a rope was embedded at least an inch into his neck. The five-month-old collie/German shepherd puppy did not have any identification tags. Cowichan and District BC SPCA Branch manager Sandi Trent said in a release the puppy was severely underweight and was trying to fight off an infection from his neck wound.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“The rope had grown at least an inch into his neck – the veterinarian estimated it had been like that for at least a month,” she said. “He’s also very skinny. Poor pup – he’s such a sweetie pie. We’re glad someone saw him and reported it to us.”

He was named Jay for the veterinarian who conducted emergency surgery on him at the Central Cowichan Animal Hospital. Trent said Jay is now responding well to treatment.

“We’re hoping to find out where he came from and talk to whoever owned him before he was found, wandering at large,” she said. “He’s such a gentle, loving dog – we’re just looking for answers and we’re hoping the public can help.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the BC SPCA animal cruelty hotline at 1-855-622-7722. A non-profit organization, the BC SPCA relies primarily on public donations to help the province’s most vulnerable animals.
