Halifax cleans up after late winter snowfall

HALIFAX — It was another day of cleaning up across Nova Scotia.

The Fall River, N.S., area was one of the hardest hit spots in HRM, leaving residents like Donna Williamson with a pile of snow to clear. “I’m totally sick of it, the only reason I’m shoveling is because I want to get out of my driveway,” she said.

Yesterday, the Halifax area saw one of the worst storms to hit the region all winter. More than twenty centimeters of snow fell, leaving the city at a total standstill.

This winter has been exceptionally hard for many, like Carolyn Doswell. The 69-year-old has had two leaks in her house, and is spending much of the day trying to clear her road.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“This is really awful. I’ve never really had to worry this much about the house and everything and I know I’m not the only one, there’s people everywhere that have had ceilings leak and that type of stuff,” Doswell tells Global News.

There were still a number of delays and cancellations Monday at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Some passengers have been stuck waiting to fly out for more than 24-hours.

The airport says this winter has been tough, but things are getting back to normal.

“It’s certainly been a different type of winter. We remember back to last winter you know, it was spread out over a longer period of time and this winter we’ve been hit hard last month in February and now this month, March is shaping up to be bad too,” said Ashley Gallant, spokesperson for the Halifax Airport Authority.

Connie Isenor and her friends are supposed to be lying on a beach in the Dominican Republic, but have already lost a full day of their vacation. “We pay a lot of money because we have to go on the March break because most of us work for the school board so you know. Times a ticking.”

After a lot of waiting, many travelers, like Connie Isenor’s friends, got their wish.  “Dominican finally!,” one man yelled as he got ready to board the plane.

For the rest of us stuck at home, and with snow to deal with, the reality is a little different.

“It sucks. We should be thinking about where we are going to plant flowers this year and we’re still snow blowing so that’s no good,” said Vince Prosper as he uses a snow blower to clean his driveway.
