Your stories: Toronto garbage collectors leaving garbage at curb

WATCH ABOVE: Mayor John Tory angry, frustrated by poor garbage service. Dave Trafford reports.

TORONTO – Mayor John Tory said he doesn’t want to see garbage collectors shirking their duties become a widespread issue in Toronto.

A Green For Life employee was taken off his route last week after Global News obtained video of him dumping green bin waste into a garbage bin at the end of a driveway near Eglinton Avenue and Lawrence Avenue and leaving it there.

Mayor Tory said Monday that the majority of Torontonians take the time to separate their garbage but its “disheartening for them and it’s frustrating and angering” for him to see workers shirk their duties.

“I don’t think it’s a widespread practice and I’m standing here now saying I wouldn’t accept it becoming any kind of a widespread practice or even being an isolated practice,” he said.

Darlene Russell said: “This practice is not happening only west of Yonge. It also has happened east of Yonge, where I reside. My garbage is picked by city employees and I have witnessed green bin material being mixed with recycling. This has happened a few times last year.”

Debra Andrews said: “Saw your lead tonight. Send a reporter to St. George St. on Tuesday morning. The garbage guys put recycling in the garbage every week. We have tried to speak to the city but nobody cares. It is atrocious – bin after bin.”

Susan Crisp said: “I have witnessed this over the past 5 years in all different areas – I saw a truck on Evans Ave. dump a street bin with three separate compartments (waste, bottles, paper) all into garbage on their truck – this was about 3 years ago. And last summer I watched a driver on Mabelle Ave in Etobicoke do the same thing – I reported to the city, but it appears it is still happening.”
