B.C. doctor says you can eat whatever you want

A Vancouver family physician is advising people to eat whatever they want.

In his new book called Forbidden Food: How Science Says You Can Eat What You Like and Like What You Eat, Dr. John Sloan says the science that supports what people think of as healthy eating may not be that substantial.

Sloan says he adds lots of sugar to his coffee, he fries his food in beef tallow and he adds lots of salt to his meals because he likes the taste.

“I’m not saying eat as much as you want,” says Sloan. “I’m saying you can eat whatever you want and science doesn’t support that there will be any harm or benefit to health outcomes, you know, longevity, heart disease, cancer, that kind of thing.”

“Personally I starve and binge. I eat a lot of what I really love and I do it infrequently.”

Sloan says that many people see sugar and salt as not only something that is bad for you, but also something that affects your weight.

“Salt intake is associated with high blood pressure, high blood pressure is associated with strokes,” he says. “Sugar intake is associated with metabolic changes, they’re complicated and sometimes they’re a little bit obscure, but those metabolic changes actually affect your well-being, usually through Type 2 diabetes.”

“But there’s just no substance in science to support the idea that decreasing your plain white sugar intake makes any difference. And the amount of weight you gain is best associated with plain old calories.”

Sloan says “absolutely” eat what you want but watch your weight.
