TORONTO – An unidentified man in Washington, D.C. is lucky to be alive after falling between two subway cars moments before the train passed right over top of him.

Surveillance video released Monday by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) shows a man stumbling along a platform at Mount Vernon Square station on Mar. 1, leaning on the train for support.

Without warning, the man falls between two subway cars. Witnesses seem shocked, and at least one person can be seen raising their arms and trying to alert authorities to the emergency.

But despite pleas for help, the train pulls out of the station.

“There were a lot of worried people on the platform,” witness Brian Rose told WUSA. “I mean, just thinking that it was going to be a bit more grisly than it turned out to be.”

Moments after the train departs, the man is helped back onto the platform — completely unharmed.

“He seemed pretty intoxicated at the time,” added Rose.

WMATA’s chief spokesperson, Dan Stessel, told The Washington Post that the man “was not injured and declined medical assistance.”

“The most important piece of safety advice is the most obvious — don’t end up on the tracks in the first place,” added Stessel. “If you are too intoxicated to stand or walk properly, consider taking a cab instead,” he said.
