New Brunswick reviews eligible distance for students to ride school buses

FREDERICTON – New Brunswick’s education minister says a study is underway to look at the distance students have to walk before they are eligible to ride a school bus.

Serge Rousselle says the Liberal government is continuing the study that began under the previous Tory government.

He says students who use buses must live more than 2.4 kilometres from school, but school district superintendents have the ability to make exceptions if local conditions warrant a shorter distance.

Green Leader David Coon says the 2.4-kilometre distance is too far, especially for young children in elementary school.

Rousselle says it’s an important issue but can’t say when the study will be complete.
