No 2015 capital grant for STC bus service

REGINA – The province will provide Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) with $10.3 million to operate its bus passenger and parcel express services in 2015. The Crown corporation says it will not take a capital grant this year.

In 2014, STC received an operating grant of $10.3 million and a capital grant of $3.3 million.

“In 2015, STC will continue to provide safe and reliable services to Saskatchewan residents, while mitigating the effects of rising costs to ensure these services are delivered efficiently,” said Jennifer Campeau, Saskatchewan minister responsible for STC.

In reference to the minister’s quote, rising costs refer to wages for in-scope staff as part of its collective bargaining agreement, along with utility and maintenance.

STC recently received took delivery of five used buses. The company says the coaches have expanded leg room, electrical outlets and Wi-Fi, standard amenities demanded by passengers. The company says it will allow them to retire buses nearing the end of their service life.

The provincial coach company operates a fleet of 43 buses throughout Saskatchewan.
