Paws for Hope offers free vet clinic for pets of people living with HIV

The Paws for Hope Animal Foundation is running a special veterinary clinic -- just for the animals of people living at Vancouver's Dr. Peter Centre. Paws for Hope

The Paws for Hope Animal Foundation is running a special veterinary clinic this weekend that offers care to pets belonging to individuals with HIV.

“It’s an opportunity for people to get pet care when pet care is almost always unavailable unless it’s an emergency because people are so busy with their own health…that when it comes to their pets they just don’t have the energy and financial aid to do that,” says Melissa Clave Brule of the Dr. Peter Centre, which provides support for those living with HIV.

According to Paws for Hope executive director Kathy Powelson, Sunday’s clinic gives pets and their owners a chance at a longer, healthier life together.

“People who have challenges–life challenges, health challenges–as a result may be more isolated than some of us,” she says. “That relationship with that pet is sometimes the most important relationship that they have. We honour that and really want to keep that relationship together for as long as possible.”
