Lake Country council votes to hold rail-trail referendum

LAKE COUNTRY — Lake Country residents are going to the polls to determine whether the community wants to borrow millions of dollars for its share of the rail trail project.

The mayor and council voted Tuesday to hold a referendum after some residents launched a successful campaign to deny the community from borrowing the money through the alternative approval process.

Mayor James Baker says the referendum will be held April 25 at a cost of about $10,000.

He says CN Rail has agreed to extend the deadline of March 31 for the purchase of the abandoned rail line, which will link Kelowna, Lake Country, Vernon and Coldstream.

Lake Country needs to borrow $2.6 million. That will buy the community eight of the 16 kilometres of rail line that runs through Lake Country.

Kelowna is buying the remaining eight kilometres.

Lake Country will have the option of buying that land from Kelowna if it desires or maintain the status quo.
