UPDATE: All extreme cold warnings mentioned in this story have ended.

SASKATOON – Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Saskatoon, Regina and much of central, southeastern Saskatchewan. Temperatures dropping into the minus 30s overnight combined with winds of 10 to 15 km/h will result in extreme wind chill value of minus 40 or colder are Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

An arctic high moving in over the province is to blame for the brisk weather.

Environment Canada issues extreme cold warnings for central and southern Saskatchewan when either the temperature or wind chill values drop to minus 40 or lower.

Wind chill describes the felt decrease in air temperature on exposed skin caused by air flow. It is important that humans are aware of wind chill values because extreme cold conditions can cause frostbite, which is the freezing of skin.

At extreme wind chill values skin can freeze in a matter of minutes.

Good news is this cool down will be short-lived.

Temperatures are going to start to moderate above extreme cold warning criteria late Wednesday morning and then skyrocket to near and even above freezing values to finish off the week and remain fairly mild into the foreseeable future.
