SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon has awarded the tender for the rehabilitation of the University Bridge to Horseshoe Hill Construction Inc. Council approved the decision during its Monday meeting.

An independent engineering assessment in 2013 determined the bridge deck to be structurally insufficient. The assessment concluded that immediate repairs are needed.

“We’re looking forward to working with Horseshoe Hill Construction Inc. on this important project that will ensure this 100-year-old bridge continues to serve commuters for many years to come,” says Mike Gutek, the city’s director of major projects.

During its rehabilitation, the bridge is expected to be closed to the general public from May 1 to Aug. 30. A single lane of traffic will remain open for emergency vehicles, Saskatoon Transit, authorized Saskatoon Health Region vehicles and buses contracted by the local school boards.

A single walkway will remain open for pedestrians during repairs.

“We’re deeply aware this work will have a significant impact on traffic flow in our city, but we are working to ensure the least disruption possible,” said Gutek.

The city says a plan is in the works to identify traffic delays at 26 intersections. Information will then be used to manage traffic flow in the city.

Horseshoe Hill Construction is a Canadian owned and operated construction firm that was formed in April 2012, according to its website.
