VERNON — It’s a trip to the park an Okanagan mother will never forget. Just after 2 p.m. Saturday, she and her three children went to Vernon’s Polson Park when a bizarre incident happened. The brakes on her stroller, which was holding her 7-month-old baby, failed. The stroller went plunging into a large pond at the park, flipping over in the process and drenching the infant in cold water.
The mother jumped in to rescue her child and was able to get the baby out safely.
A Vernon City bylaw officer saw the incident and called 911. Fire officials arrived shortly after to find the family shaken up, cold and wet. Firefighters say the sun was deceiving, as the temperature was still quite cold. They wrapped the baby in blankets and an ambulance took the mom and child to the hospital as a precaution.
Fire crews stayed on scene to help fish some of the mothers belongings out of the pond. They say they’ve never been called to an incident like this at the Polson Park pond before.
