Rare letter from early B.C. auctioned for $3,850

An 1854 letter from a Hudson's Bay employee to his daughter is being auctioned off on Feb. 21, 2015. All Nations Stamp and Coin

A letter written by a Hudson’s Bay employee to his daughter 160 years ago was sold in an online auction in Vancouver today.

The letter–which is considered to be one of the oldest surviving letters from an era when B.C. was considered Hudson’s Bay territory–was written by John Frederick Kennedy in Fort Simpson, a fur trading post near modern-day Prince Rupert. The letter is dated August 26, 1854, about four years before the colony of British Columbia was formed and 17 years before B.C. became the sixth province to join Confederation.

All Nations Stamp and Coin sold the letter for $3,850, above estimates.

Brian Grant Duff of All Nations Stamp & Coin says the letter comes from noted collector Gerald Wellburn, who auctioned off his collection of B.C. items back in 1988 for about $1 million.

According to Duff, Wellburn “retained some items in his family, [he] passed away and they were lost for some of period of time. Recently they walked into our store.”
