Trucking association asks drivers to stay off the roads during bad weather

MONCTON – The Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association says they’re concerned about drivers hitting the roads in severe weather.

Donnie Fillmore speaks for the Association and says his members want drivers on the highways to be as safe as possible.

“We want to make sure everybody’s safe throughout all weather conditions especially storms where visibility is poor,” he said.

MRDC manages a section of Route 2 in the province. Peter Fenety is the area manager for the western division and says transport trucks can be hazardous for other drivers.

“The biggest problem with them is they will perhaps pass a bunch of cars and then create white out conditions for the vehicles that just passed,” he said.

The day following Sunday’s storm several transport trucks and smaller vehicles were found off the highway.

Albert Macdonald has been driving transport trucks for some 40 years and says he’s never had an accident and owes that to staying off the roads in bad weather.

“I’ve been to a Alaska and we had to keep driving until we found a safe haven and then we waited it out until the snow plows eventually showed up,” he said. “The ice is the worst and of course other drivers.”

Fillmore also runs his own trucking company. He says drivers under Atlantic Pacific Transport are told to stay off the roads if they don’t feel they’re safe.

“We ask our guys to get off the highways and get to a safe place where there’s food and heat,” he said.
