WINNIPEG — The proceeds of the 11th annual Winnipeg Police Service Half Marathon will go to the Canadian Cancer Society in support of brain cancer.

Mayor Brian Bowman and Police Chief Devon Clunis made the announcement during a news conference Tuesday afternoon. The money raised will be matched dollar for dollar by Brain Canada through the Canada Brain research Fund.

“I have to thank the WPS for putting this event on and focusing on brain tumours and brain cancer and to match those funds so we can nip this as quickly as possible and do this research and help find a path through my brain tumour,” Lawrence Traa, a brain cancer survivor told the group gathered at Tuesday’s news conference.

Also announced on Tuesday was the addition of a 5 Kilometre run to the traditional 13 mile race and two person relay.
