Man pleads guilty to 25 charges in $5M Wetaskiwin arson investigation

EDMONTON — A 28-year-old Wetaskiwin man has pleaded guilty to more than two dozen charges related to a lengthy arson investigation.

Peter Terrence Jones was facing 26 charges, including arson, possession of stolen property and break and enter, for a number of fires in Wetaskiwin that caused an estimated $5 million damage.

In Wetaskiwin court on Thursday, Jones plead guilty to 25 charges. RCMP say one of the original 26 charges was previously withdrawn by the Crown.

Jones was initially arrested in November 2014 in connection with large fires at the Vanouk Welding and Machine Shop, the CP Rail yard and the Wood Art Cabinet shop.

With information gained through the investigation, officers executed a search warrant at the 28-year-old’s home and seized several items believed to be related to other unsolved arson investigations.

Jones was arrested again on Feb. 9, 2015 in connection with the fires at the Wetaskiwin Airport, Parkview RV and Parkland fertilizer.

It’s believed Jones was previously convicted with setting two churches on fire in the Wetaskiwin area in 2009. He was sentenced to four years in jail.

Jones remains in custody. Sentencing in the case is set for April 14, 2015 in Wetaskiwin.
