Manitoba leadership candidates claim same supporters

As the race ramps up to be Manitoba premier and leader some candidates are claiming the same supporters. File / Global News

WINNIPEG — In the race to become Manitoba NDP leader and premier, some of the candidates are touting support from the same person.

Delegates to the party’s March 8 leadership contest are now being chosen at constituency meetings across the province, and the three leadership candidates are each fielding slates of delegates who support them.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

On a few occasions, a name has appeared on a slate supporting Premier Greg Selinger and another slate supporting Theresa Oswald — a former cabinet minister who helped launch the caucus revolt.

Oswald says she cannot speak for the premier, but says her team has been careful to double-check that each person they claim as a delegate is indeed on her side.

Selinger and his campaign team did not respond to interview requests.

Up to 2,217 delegates will vote for the party’s leader by choosing among Selinger, Oswald, and Steve Ashton, a former infrastructure minister.
