PHOTOS: B.C. resident captures rare fight between seal and octopus

"It was almost as if the seal was showing off something.". Bob Ianson

VANCOUVER – It’s an event that happens often enough, but is rarely seen: a seal surfacing with a large octopus in its mouth.

Bob Ianson was out for a stroll on Monday afternoon near Odgen Point, in Victoria, when he saw the seal rising up from the water.

“It was almost like he was showing off or something,” said Ianson. “Like he was a puppy, looking up at us, wagging its tail and showing off what he had caught.”

The octopus was still alive when Ianson first saw the duo. But after a 10-minute struggle, the tentacled-creature lost the fight.

“There are some photos where you can see the octopus’ teeth,” Ianson added. “I thought, ‘I wouldn’t want to tangle with that guy.'”

Ianson said the seal then took its catch and swam away, as suddenly as it had arrived.
