Mother nature’s seasonal confusion isn’t sitting well many Southern Albertan’s, especially after such a successful skis season last year. Not only is this bad news for skiers, but some businesses too.
Jerry Strate, the owner of Aplenland in Lethbridge, says the store has even brought out its summer inventory early this year.
“We are bringing our summer stuff out about three weeks earlier than we normally would,” says Strate. “When it’s 18 degrees in town people are looking at bikes, we have seen a boom in that business for being so early in the year .”
Unseasonably warm, rainy weather has finally got the best of Castle Mountain ski resort. shutting down the hill until at least this Friday. Strate says this is extremely rare.
“Maybe three times in 35 years.”
Meanwhile some parts of B.C. have been seen significant snowfalls. Many Albertan’s headed north this family day week-end in search of the white stuff.
“There is a lot of snow in the Banff area and a little bit further north there was snow. Further north there is a tremendous amount of snow,” adds Strate.
Despite the lack of snow, Aplenland says sales in January were the best in years, but with Environment Canada calling for temperatures in the double digets later this week it remains to be seen if that pace can continue.
