CALGARY – The Calgary Fire Department is crediting a working smoke detector with helping a man escape a house fire on Monday.
Emergency crews were called to the 6700 block of 23rd Ave N.E. just before midnight.
When they arrived, firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the basement suite of a two-storey home.
The man living inside the suite was able to get out safely, thanks to the sounding of a smoke alarm which alerted him to the blaze.
Crews say the damage from the fire was contained to a single room in the basement, which was under construction at the time.
No one was injured, but the resident will have to find alternative accommodations until repairs are completed.
