Transit to be discussed at Toronto city council

TORONTO – Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack plan and questions surrounding the proposed Scarborough subway will be the hot topics of discussion as city council meets today.

Councillor Josh Matlow, who is a proponent of the Scarborough LRT, will be tabling a series of questions regarding the feasibility of the subway extension which includes inquiries about the cost of operating the underground option and ridership projections.

Meanwhile, a report in the Toronto Star revealed that the city had to pay $75 million for cancelling the Scarborough LRT.

The province had initially agreed to pay for a seven stop above rail transit line, but the plan was voted down by council in favour of building a subway with three stops for a cost of more than $3.5 billion.

Mayor Tory has said he intends to move ahead with the subway construction as voted on by council.

With regards to SmartTrack, council will vote on an accelerated work plan to study the elements of Regional Express Rail on a number of corridors including Stouffville/Lakeshore East and the Eglinton Avenue West GO line.
