Video of armed bank robbery released as six-year anniversary approaches

CALGARY – Police are releasing news photos and information about a terrifying bank robbery that remains unsolved six years later.

It happened on Saturday, February 7th, 2009. Police say the robber walked into a TD Canada Trust located in the 3000 block of 17th Avenue S.E. after a staff member unlocked the main door.

The suspected pulled out a handgun and forced staff members to open the bank vault. He then took a substantial amount of money before locking bank staff inside the vault and leaving.

Although no one was injured in the robbery, police say it left staff extremely shaken and has had a significant impact on their lives.

“Something will happen to them while they’re working which will remind them of the incident,” explained Detective Stu Keown. “Someone will say something, or they’ll have a look at somebody and it will trigger the memories again, and it’s a traumatic incident for all of them.”

On Monday, police revealed they now believe the robber was provided inside knowledge by a bank employee regarding the branch’s opening procedures.

“Each particular branch has their own opening procedures,” says Keown. “Those opening procedures are constantly changing and evolving.”

“The information provided in this particular bank robbery was specific to TD Canada Trust.”

The suspect is described as 6’ tall, weighing 170 to 190 lbs., wearing blue coveralls, a white hard hat and a black ski mask.
