WATCH: West Kelowna’s Facebook Cowboy

Kelly Hayes reports

WEST KELOWNA — Tyler Secord, has special needs — his need is to ride a horse — to be a cowboy.

“I can do anything,” says the 20-year-old West Kelowna man with Down Syndrome.

So his sister, Calista Collins and his mother Becky decided to help him out.

“He’s pretty independent. He likes to buy his own things,” says Collins.

She posted an add on Facebook — in a buy and sell page.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I couldn’t believe how many people responded,” she says.

The page took off and the offers started coming in.

“I actually cried. I couldn’t believe it,” says Tyler’s mother, Becky.

“I have tons of horse equipment!” writes, Martia Irwin on the Facebook page. “List anything he may need or want in the near future and would be happy to help.”

Tyler was in need a pair of boots. Christine Harris stepped up to the plate, offering her husband’s. Again, free of charge.

“I have a pair of men’s cowboy boots he can have my husband’s. He doesn’t wear them,” she writes.

“He’s also been offered free roping lessons, come spring when the snow is all gone,” says Becky.

And some of the strangers started reaching into their wallets.

“Then people starting saying: ‘Well, I don’t have anything to donate, can I donate money’. I thought that was incredible, but I really don’t want to take people’s money,” says Collins.

All that Tyler is missing is a horse. That too is coming. A free lease from Northern B.C. beginning next spring.
