Sam Smith takes home 4 Grammy Awards

ABOVE: British singer Sam Smith spoke backstage about what he has coming up and how it feels to be a multiple Grammy winner.

TORONTO — Being unlucky in love paid off for Sam Smith at Sunday night’s 57th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

“I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year,” said Smith after his hit “Stay With Me” was named record of the year.

“Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.”

The UK singer-songwriter, who performed “Stay With Me” with Mary J. Blige during the telecast, also won song of the year, best new artist and pop vocal album (for In the Lonely Hour).

“This is the best night of my life,” said Smith, who earlier told the crowd that loving himself led to success.

“I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music. It was when I started to be myself that the music flowed.”

Close behind Smith was Pharrell Williams, who won four Grammys last year and picked up three this time.

The singer won pop solo performance and music video for “Happy” as well as best urban contemporary album for GIRL.

On the show, Toronto’s The Weeknd introduced Williams, who put a new twist on “Happy.”

Beyoncé accepted the Grammy for R&B performance of the year (for “Drunk in Love”) after winning two awards during the pre-show.

Rosanne Cash also earned three Grammys at the pre-show.

Taking two Grammys each were Eminem (rap album, rap/sung collaboration) and Kendrick Lamar (rap performance, rap song).

Beck, who hasn’t won Grammys since the late ‘90s, took home album of the year and rock album for Morning Phase.

He performed during the show with Chris Martin of Coldplay.

Theirs was one of nearly two dozen performances during the broadcast, which ran three-and-a-half hours.

The show kicked off with AC/DC doing their recorded-in-Vancouver single “Rock or Bust” followed by the band’s classic “Highway to Hell.”

Madonna, dressed as a matador, gave a performance of her new song “Living for Love” that ended with her being hoisted into the rafters.

Katy Perry sang the ballad “By the Grace of God” after a victim of domestic abuse spoke to the audience and a video message from U.S. president Barack Obama urged artists to help end violence against women.

“It’s on us, all of us, to create a culture where violence isn’t tolerated,” said Obama.

Kanye West performed solo and later with Rihanna and Paul McCartney — and almost hijacked Beck’s moment in the spotlight by standing up and walking towards the stage after the album of the year winner was announced.

Other performers included Ariana Grande, Tony Bennett with Lady Gaga, Adam Levine with Gwen Stefani, Miranda Lambert, Ed Sheeran, John Legend with Common, and Juanes.

Canadian nominees Drake, Joshua Bartholomew, deadmau5 and Arcade Fire came up empty.
