Victoria woman’s stolen ring makes a mysterious return

WATCH: A Victoria woman who had her wedding ring stolen in a break-in was astonished when an envelope arrived at her workplace. Kylie Stanton reports.

For the past four years, Brette Ellis put her ring in the same spot every night.

But on Jan. 6, thieves stole the nearly 200-year-old family heirloom from Ellis’ Victoria home.

“I got a phone call from my mom saying ‘your front door has been kicked in and your house has been robbed,'” she says.

Thieves got away with several items, including a registered shotgun and rifle, a laptop, and $800 in cash.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Police tracked down the three suspects and all three face charges. Most of the stolen items were recovered–except for the ring.

“We couldn’t find it,” says Cst. Mike Russell of Victoria Police. “We couldn’t get it back.”

So Ellis took matters into her own hands, posting a plea for help on Facebook that was shared more than 76,000 times. Then an article about the theft appeared in the Victoria Times Colonist.

After the article was published, the Time-Colonist reporter visited Ellis at her workplace carrying an envelope that contained the ring and a letter that read, “I believe this is the ring from the paper. Please make sure it gets back to the family. Thank you.”

Police are investigating.

“We’re glad it’s back, but we’d certainly like to follow up and figure out how they came in possession of that,” says Cst. Russell.

Ellis is just glad to have the ring back.

“It means the world,” she says. “It’s like winning the lottery.”
