MEXICO CITY – An orderly who was injured in last week’s gas explosion that destroyed a hospital in Mexico’s capital died Friday, raising the death toll from the blast to five.

Jorge Luis Tinoco, 27, was hurt in the Jan. 29 explosion while trying to move newborns to safety, the Mexico City government said in a statement.

He became the third employee of the Maternity and Children’s Hospital in Cuajimalpa, on the western edge of the capital, to die from the blast. Two nurses and two infants died previously.

Investigators say a leak on a propane truck that had arrived to supply the hospital caused a deadly gas cloud to accumulate. It ignited in a fireball that levelled 70 per cent of the building.
