REGINA – The first day of testimony in the second degree murder trial of a 20-year-old man accused of killing his mother got underway at Court of Queen’s Bench Thursday.

The Crown Prosecutor told the jury of seven men and five women that 46-year-old Rachel Shepherd was found beaten to death in a Regina apartment belonging to James Myers.

The 911 call reporting the death was played in the courtroom. A man who identified himself as an employee at Street Culture Kids – an organization that helps under-serviced youth – made the initial call.

Court heard that Myers arrived at the centre in the early hours of June 1, 2013 asking for help. Later on the 911 call, a man who identified himself as Myers came on and said he found his mom dead in his apartment.

Police officers were the first investigators on scene. Testimony revealed Shepherd was found partly covered by a blanket on a mattress in the living area of the apartment.

Photos from the crime scene were also shown in court, which appeared to show blood covering Shepherd’s face. Blood also appears to be on the mattress, the walls and on some pieces of clothing on the floor.

The Crown is expected to call 27 witnesses over the course of the three-week trial. Myers was 18-years-old at the time of the Shepherd’s death.
