WINNIPEG – The former chief of staff to Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger has been given a six-figure severance package after less than three years on the job.

Documents obtained by the Opposition Progressive Conservatives show Liam Martin was paid out just over $146,000 when he parted ways with the premier in November.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Martin left after a caucus revolt erupted and Selinger has hired a replacement as well as two new advisers.

Tory house leader Kelvin Goertzen said taxpayer dollars are being used by the premier to fight off an internal NDP battle.

The premier’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The last time a chief of staff walked away with a six-figure severance package — in 2012 — the government said one year’s salary was a standard amount.
