REGINA – A proposed strip club could get the green light on Monday night when it goes before Regina city council.
If approved, the adult entertainment venue will be at 1047 Park Street, formerly the site of Whiskey Saloon.
The proposal meets city bylaws, which require a strip club be more than 183 metres from churches, schools and day cares.
Council has received over a dozen letters of concern and an online petition with more than 500 names. Several opponents argue connections between stripping and prostitution, human trafficking and other forms of organized crime.
UPDATE (11:41 p.m.): Regina’s first licensed strip club proposal denied
The applicant, Bryon Gottfredsen, said he plans to run a safe business and there is no guarantee the club will even have stripping. Gottfredsen also said he has met with the Regina Police Service to discuss safety concerns.
New regulations came into effect in 2014, which relaxed liquor lows and allowed for stripping and wet t-shirt contests in drinking establishments. Full-frontal nudity is still prohibited and nipples must be covered.
