TORONTO – A Scarborough MP announced Thursday that he’s battling cancer.
Arnold Chan, the Liberal MP representing Scarborough-Agincourt, posted a statement on his website to announce he has been diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer.
“Since learning of my diagnosis, I have been working with my physicians on the best course of treatment,” the statement reads. “I will be undergoing a period of aggressive treatment but I have been informed that my prognosis is excellent. I am confident that my cancer will be beaten.”
He intends to continue working throughout his treatment and says his office will remain open. He says his treatment will require him to take “some time away” from his work in the House of Commons.
Nasopharyngeal cancer affects the upper part of the throat, according to the American Cancer Society. The cancer is fairly rare and affects less than one person for every 100,000 each year in the United States.
The society expects only 3,200 cases to occur in 2015.
