Massive slip-and-slide coming to Edmonton’s Grierson Hill

EDMONTON – Get your bathing suit ready – a gigantic slip-and-slide is coming to downtown Edmonton this summer.

The 305 metre (1,000 foot) long waterslide is part of a travelling event called Slide the City. The event tours across the U.S. and Canada, holding water parties featuring ‘the biggest slip-and-slide ever to hit asphalt.’

Edmontonians will take in the event on Saturday, July 18, 2015, when the slide will be set up on Grierson Hill, which runs between the Shaw Conference Centre and Louise McKinney Park.

Participants will be able to sign up to slide as many times as they want. Solo sliders will be given a mouth guard, but have to bring their own inflatable tube (or purchase one on site.) Those who choose the more expensive multi-slide options will receive some extra goodies, including a tube so they don’t have to bring their own.

The cost varies between $15 for a single slide to $45 for an unlimited all-day pass. The earlier participants register, the cheaper the options are. Also available are a limited number of Family & Friends group passes, which allow up to four people to slide all day for $37.50 a person.

Sliders must be taller than 3’8″ or older than five years old, but those under 18 will need a parent or guardian to sign off for them. Sliders can wear anything other than jeans or clothing with rivets, but are asked to keep it tasteful.

The slide will be in Calgary for two days on the August long weekend. The company’s website indicates it is trying to go to Fort McMurray sometime in July, and is looking into hosting an event in Red Deer or Sylvan Lake. Residents in those communities can sign up on a mailing list to be notified when details are confirmed.

The first-ever Slide the City event was held last year in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the company is based.

Organizers appear to be affiliated with Color Me Rad 5K, a for-profit fun run in which participants are splashed with coloured powder. The run was held in Edmonton the past two summers.

Editor’s Note: This story was first published in January, and was updated on June 6 with new details on the location.
