Investigators are trying to determine the exact cause of a two-alarm fire in East Vancouver, but say it appears to be suspicious.
Heavy smoke was spotted pouring from the Maritime Labour Centre near Triumph St. and Victoria Dr. shortly after 2 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Thirty-nine firefighters in total were called out, and they concentrated their efforts on an office in the building, before checking out whether the flames had spread to the roof.
Vancouver Fire’s Brian Hutchinson says that while the fire was very aggressive, crews were able to prevent it from spreading, though damage is extensive.
According to Vancouver Fire Dept. Acting Battalion Chief Bruce Tebbutt, no one was in the building at the time of the fire.
It’s not clear whether there are any events scheduled today for the centre, which includes a 600-seat auditorium, or whether it will be able to open.
