Saanich mayor asks for investigation of software installed on his computer

What sort of software was installed onto the Mayor of Saanich’s work computer?

That’s the question Richard Atwell is asking the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner to review. He says the software, Spector 360, tracks any websites he visits “without my knowledge or consent.”

While the Saanich Police investigated the matter, he’s asked for a second review, at it comes as he’s also alleging the police have conducted a campaign of harassment against him.

“It’s definitely a pretty extensive piece of software…if you’re not being told you’re being monitored, that’s equivalent of being spied on,” says Jerome Segura of Malwarebytes.

However, Saanich councillors say the upgrade to the security system of office computers was approved months ago. An independent audit recommended the city adopt such a system to prevent external hacking threats and to review “internal activity that may result from external threats.”

Atwell says he’ll be working from home and sending emails from a non-work account as the controversy continues.
