WATCH: City crews clear Leslie Street of snow and ice following a watermain break
TORONTO – A watermain break early Tuesday morning turned a Toronto street into a small ski hill on one of the coldest days of the year.
An underground pipe burst around 5 a.m. on Leslie Street north of Finch Avenue East sending water spraying all over the roadway.
City crews managed to cap the leak around 6:30 a.m., but not before the frigid temperatures caused the water to accumulate into a miniature mountain.
Leslie Street remains off limits to traffic between Clansman Boulevard and Old Cummer Avenue in both directions.
Police say the road won’t reopen until all of the ice and snow is removed.
The City of Toronto is currently under an Extreme Cold Weather Alert as the temperature reached -29 degrees Celsius with the wind chill Monday night and into Tuesday morning.
