WINNIPEG – The Royal Canadian Air Force rescued eight men drifting on an ice floe in Nunavut with the help of 17 Wing Winnipeg Sunday.

According to a news release, the group of men went adrift on January 9.

On January 10, the Nunavut Emergency Measures Organization asked the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton, Ont., for help as the floe was drifting beyond the local community’s reach.

The first aircraft on scene was a CC-130 Hercules from 17 Wing in Winnipeg. It arrived Saturday evening and dropped radios, survival equipment, rations, water, and life rafts for the group.

The men were rescued Sunday morning near Coral Harbour, NU by a helicopter from 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia and airlifted to safety.

The group was about 55 km south of Coral Harbour and about 27 km from the nearest shoreline when they were rescued.
