Birthday celebration ends in tragedy for Quebecer living in Mexico

MONTREAL — A woman from Quebec was killed in a tragic car accident in Mexico early Friday morning.

Diana Khaddaj, a spokesperson for the Canadian government told Global News that consular officials in Playa del Carmen are in contact with local authorities and are providing consular assistance to the family.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Canadian Citizen who has died in Mexico,” Khaddaj said via email.

According to Mexican media reports, police were called to the scene of a fatal car accident just after 1:40 a.m. on the Playa del Carmen Boulevard, not far from the membership-only warehouse chain, Sam’s Club.

Véronique Gilbert, 35, and a friend, 30, also Canadian, were out celebrating a birthday, when Gilbert apparently lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a cement pole.

She was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived at the scene; her friend was treated for shock.
