KELOWNA, B.C. – Monday and Tuesday were rare snow days for Central and North Okanagan schools and the school districts are planning to end the closures on Wednesday by reopening schools.

Central Okanagan School District Superintendent Hugh Gloster says based on the current weather forecast, as well as the ability of crews to clear most of the roads in the school district, they are planning to have classes in session as normal on Wednesday.

“We fully anticipate that there will be some safety concerns for both pedestrians and motorists as not all side streets and sidewalks will be completely cleared prior to school opening,” says Gloster.
He adds the school district is making an appeal to the community to ensure sidewalks typically used by students are cleared, to drive safely especially near schools and for parents to assess the safety of routes their children take to school before sending them to class Wednesday morning.
He says while it’s possible some busses might not be able to reach all the normal stops, maintenance crews plan to have bus routes cleared and sanded before Wednesday morning’s bus runs.
Superintendent Glenn Borthistle with the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District says the district is still under a winter weather warning but crews made good progress clearing away snow from parking lots and walk ways to schools over the past few days.
The Vernon School District has also announced the return of classes on Wednesday.
