Ways to get home safely on New Year’s Eve

CALGARY – As another year draws to a close, Calgarians are getting ready to ring in 2015.

While people work out their final plans, a new cab company is offering advice on how to get home.

“Do not wait until the last moment. Call the cab in advance, an hour, maybe two hours,” says Rupinder Gill of Calgary United Cabs.

If you’re planning to party downtown, Gill suggests trying to hail a cab outside a hotel or around the bars. Adding most taxis will be lined up or circling those areas throughout the night.

Another option is a designated driver service. Some are already booked up, but others are still taking reservations.

DDKINGZ Designated Drivers has 20 people trained and extra dispatchers ready to take calls.

Whether you use a driver service or call a cab, another helpful hint is to make sure your cellphone is charged.

That way you can receive confirmation calls or phone the company in case your plans change.

Calgary Transit is also extending its hours from 1:30 a.m. to 3 a.m., but not for free.

“In order to pay the extra $100,000 it will cost to extend the services, we need to pay for that somehow and so we feel it’s only fitting that if people are out revelling that $3 cash fare for an adult trip is a pretty good deal to get home at that time of night,” said Neil McKendrick, coordinator of Strategic Transit Planning.

CTrains will run every 15 minutes and buses on 14 of the main commuter routes around the city, every 30 minutes.
