Best Boxing Day offer? Free Hugs in Kelowna!

Neetu Garcha / Global Okanagan

KELOWNA – Some lucky Okanagan residents were feeling the squeeze in downtown Kelowna Friday, as about a dozen people were delivering a personal act of kindness.

This is the fifth annual “free hugs” campaign in the city. Participants say it’s a win-win because it feels nice to give out hugs, and it makes people happy to receive one. But it’s more than just a random act of kindness. Organizers started the tradition in memory of a local resident, Wayne Cobb, who passed away five years ago.

“He was a big fan of paying things forward and always wanted to do the free hugs thing, he didn’t get an opportunity to do it because he passed away so we decided to do it, five years ago,” says event organizer, Angie Clowry.

Now, every boxing day, a handful of huggers turn out in his honour.
