TORONTO – A Utah man impressed his colleagues at a company holiday party by chugging almost a litre of eggnog in 12 seconds, winning him a $50 gift certificate and three days in a hospital.
Ryan Roche, 33, was about to leave a company party earlier this month when one of his coworkers convinced him to partake in a chugging contest.
“Everyone knows I’m pretty competitive,” Roche told ABC News. “I just decided I was going to win. So I pretty much just opened it up and poured it down my throat.”
Roche was a winner, alright: The father of three beat the party’s previous best time by 10 seconds.
And then…”two hours later I was laying on the couch, shaking uncontrollably, nauseous, having fevers and panting,” the chugging champ said.
Dr. Robert Schilz of University Hospitals in Cleveland explained to ABC News the festive drink, which was alcohol-free, may have worked its way into Roche’s windpipe, triggering an infection.
“It was not fun,” Roche said. “It took me a full week of recovery to be 100 per cent.”
