Woman killed by semi on Highway 1

WATCH: Police in the Fraser Valley are trying to determine what led to an accident that claimed the life of a woman. Jeremy Hunka has more.

Police are investigating a fatal collision that shut down Highway 1 eastbound near Prest Rd. in Chilliwack for much of Sunday morning.

Officers say a vehicle went off the road and into a ditch at approximately 2:30 a.m. The driver got out of her car and a highway worker who was passing by stopped to provide assistance. As the worker investigated the damaged car, the driver ended up on the roadway and was hit by a semi-trailer truck.

RCMP say the driver of the semi stopped to help following the collision.

Investigators have not released details about the victim. RCMP Insp. Davy Lee says at this point there is no indication that alcohol was a factor.

“Situations like this are rare and thankfully they don’t happen too often, but it’s extremely tragic when they do,” says Adam Grossman with ICBC. He’s reminding people to stay in their car if they have accidents on highways.

“Remain as calm as you can. You’re safest in your vehicle in almost all occasions.”
