EDMONTON — Edmontonians woke up to a thick coat of ice covering the city’s streets, sidewalks, and cars.

“We’ve had some freezing rain around here this morning,” weather specialist Kevin O’Connell said Saturday morning.

“And until we start getting some travelling on it and getting some heat, we will have some slippery sections on the intersections and bridge decks.”

At noon, RCMP said Highway 16 and Highway 16a west of Edmonton to Stony Plain were still in poor driving condition due to earlier freezing rain.  They said that although the ice is melting and crews have put down sand and salt, there are still some icy patches drivers need to be mindful of.

Fortunately for Edmontonians, temperatures will be back on the plus side of zero later Saturday afternoon, according to O’Connell.
