Warm winter weather not welcomed by all

Watch above: Beautiful weather that’s been breaking long-standing records in Saskatchewan isn’t bringing cheer to all. Amber Rockliffe finds out what problems are associated with all the melting.

SASKATOON – The mild temperatures have some people celebrating, but for others, the melting snow and slush is causing problems in Saskatoon. City crews have been busy clearing and unplugging catch basins.

“The areas that are the biggest concern are entrances to crescents, intersections, that sort of thing, where cars are turning and churning up the snow pack,” said Pat Hyde, the city’s director of public works.

The city has removed over 1,100 tandem truck loads of snow from priority streets and business improvement districts over the past few weeks and is now focusing on residential areas.

“We’re dealing with trouble spots as they arise, and as we get complains and concerns regarding those,” Hyde explained.

Over the past few days, MD Ambulance has received dozens of reports of people slipping and falling. Paramedics are warning people to wear proper footwear and put salt down on sidewalks.

“From fractured hips to legs to ankles, it’s pretty dangerous out there,” explained Troy Davies with MD Ambulance.

“There’s a lot of black ice everywhere, and every morning until it gets to about noon or half way through the day, it’s going to be really icy out there.”

The warm temperatures have caused the Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink to close temporarily and its annual Twinkle Lights Skating Party has been bumped to Dec.18.
