Alberta premier’s senior staff make $2.2M total

EDMONTON – The Alberta government’s latest figures show all 12 of Premier Jim Prentice’s senior staff earn more than $103,000 a year.

The list, posted on the government’s website, shows the top earner is Jay Hill, who is the province’s senior representative to Saskatchewan, British Columbia and the North. He makes an annual base salary of $243,000. That doesn’t include benefits like paid holidays, reimbursement for authorized travel and subsistence expenses, and a health spending account.

Others who make more than $200,000 a year are chief of staff Mike Percy and communications director Mike Storeshaw.

In total, the 12 people in the senior office make just under $2.2 million a year.

In December 2013, the government announced it was bringing in new rules to make public the salaries and other benefits paid to its top wage earners.

With the exception of Crown prosecutors, the province posted Alberta government employees’ compensation details in January. The list showed more than 3,000 government employees had base salaries above $100,000. The list did not include board agencies or commissions.
